Are you Born a Champion?
by Janice Combs

Many people today probably think that players are just so good that they stand out above all the rest. What I have found in my travels to various satellite circuits over the past 10 years is that there are a wealth of players who look as good as those occupying the spots on the major tour with the exception of maybe 4 or 5 players in the world. The only difference is they (many Europeans) are about 10 rounds away from the top 100.

When a player has no ranking and no wild card help, she must start at the very bottom on the women's satellite tour. She must begin in a five-round open qualifying so she can earn .75 points (that is point 75) and $100 and then do this two more times to gain a world ranking and hopefully a ranking high enough so she will not need to stay in qualifying for too long. For the "rest of the story" please reference Girls on Tour

Last summer in Belgium and also in Croatia, there were 3 tournaments in a row with four or five-round Open Qualifyings. In one Open Qualifying, the highest ranked player was #400 in the world. She had won the previous $10,000 tournament, but because of the huge draw and abundance of players ranked as high as 200 participating, she was pushed into the Open Qualifying again. She withdrew, citing an injury, probably because she knew even if she made it into the main draw after4 or 5 qualifying matches, this could mean at least 10 matches in a row (counting the week before) to simply make it to the main draw of the $10,000 and no guarantee of money or points unless she could make it through that qualifying, despite being #400 in the world. Even if she made it through qualifying it could leave her so exhausted that she would poop out in the first round of the main draw, use up a valuable tournament from her quota (under 18 year olds are limited in how many tournaments they can play) and only end up with .75 points and $100 and find that this will not affect the raising of her ranking enough to have risked this tournament. Such is the life of the average 14 or 15 year old trying to establish herself in the rankings by truly starting at the bottom and hopefully not getting wiped out by the players ranked as high as 200 playing in a $10,000 satellite event. This is all so pathetic as these girls will never get the recognition that they deserve for all of their efforts. It is still rah, rah Williams and guess what, they never even had to play in Belgium or Croatia or any Open Qualifying, for that matter, they just got a bunch of freebies and ran with it. But who said life is fair. Venus still has trouble defeating Talaja and she (Talaja) spent at least 5 years in these satellite level events.

Keep on pursuing young ladies of the satellite tour and if you make it through the Open Qualifyings in the Wild, Wild East and win those 30 something matches that you will need to win in order to even be ranked in the top 500, you are truly the champions and deserve to rise up in the rankings as far as you can go.

My prayers and hope for justice to you all. And hopefully you have the passion in you to speak up to the powers that be who could be ruining your career with many of their new stupid rules dictating your future, but never give up (at least until you are 20).

If you (the public) are ever in touch with these players, hire them to play with you or your kids, and by doing so, you will help them finance this grueling and expensive satellite tour. They have no help many times and we could help them in just this way.
