American Pro Tennis gone...
by Janice Combs

I am tired of being a loser in tennis. We, US, are the only country successfully messing up any chances for our kids to be a world force in tennis. College tennis and that stupid "amateur status" combined with the IV drip of USTA wild cards poisons the very essence of sport in our country, actually depriving our players the chance to excel and prosper on their own in a mature fashion by humbly starting at the bottom step by step as the Russians and all of Eastern Europe are expected to do. Eastern Europeans work their butts off from 12 to 20 practicing, practicing and more practicing, going to the ground floor, of $10,000's, truly starting at the bottom, working their way up so THEY can FEEL IT and the USTA only smothers our losers and underachievers with wild cards and fake hype fully depriving our kids of the very essence of sport, which is to win on your own....with no help, just win. I am outraged at what we do to kill our spirit in this country.

Kind of like keeping our players barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen.

The europeans come to this country and take the college scholarship as a club med consolation prize (for not making it on the tour after having tried at least) and all we can do is complain that we are not getting any....when we should be grateful that at least someone shows up on campus to provide some recreational competition while attending classes at a university.

To advocate that this is a tie to pro tennis, is ridiculous. We have it all backwards. College tennis is not the road to pro tennis, nor is junior tennis in this country for that matter. One supports the other, but neither has anything to do with pro tennis.

And when it is all said and done, we should have a country producing players right and left. We do not. Not with our "system."
