Women's Poor Tour
by Janice Combs

Oh my gosh, is she complaining again? No it's just time for some more numbers.....ladies..... so please pay attention. Hello out there in paradise, womens pro (poor) tour. Not you Venus and Serena, you may be excused....because you both have taken (won) all of the money from the WTA Tour by swinging your way through singles and now doubles...you are wiping out the budget!!!!

Numbers: 200 - 151 in the world are making an average of $45,000 dollars
Numbers: 150 - 100 in the world are making an average of $90,000 dollars

So how much is everybody else making? Numbers 201 - 1159 Not enough to make a living unless you are earning it all in Eastern Europe or Thailand or India and planning on staying there for the rest of your career...

Now the problem is with the travel (air fare, hotels, food, ground transportation) as we cannot seem to keep ourselves in one place to earn this money. Somebody got the idea that we need to go all over the world to pick up these "big" checks. Sometimes we spend $3,000 to get a check for $160....of course we thought we might get a check for $5,000 but something happened in the warm-up or the foreign food the night before or the temperature, blind linesmen, humidity, jet lag or language (what!!!) or nationalistic crowd that kept us from getting that big check....or maybe it was the animal that kept running on the court...

Now this really is not funny because I am known as the budgeter from (you know where) and I can make it on around $36,000 per year including everything to get my player into 35 tournaments, receive training and occasionally travel with her, then I know everybody else doing the same is spending around $60,000 if they are traveling very full time on the tour because I am really really cheap.....

Women's Pro Tennis is unfortunately very, very underpaid at the 200 - 1159 level. We do not have the same luxury as the AAA Baseball players or minor league hockey players who have no overhead, make a decent salary of $50,000 - $250,000 before they even hit MLB or the NHL.

O.K. so now what? Nothing....just practice and get better fast...I just thought you would like to know the rest of the story...
